The last couple of weeks have been full of rainy days across the country, especially in central and northern Israel. While Israel is always thought of as having pretty great weather, its winters are filled with some rainy days that make it hard to see the mostly outdoor sights in every city. So if you happen to get caught in Israel in the rain, here are some suggestions on what you can see and do while staying dry.
Jerusalem
The Herzl Museum on Har Herzl is a great spot to check out in the rain. While walking Har Herzl is a bit dreary in the rain, the on-site museum is an often-overlooked gem. It's a multimedia experience that walks you through Herzl's life and dreams for Israel, ending with a message of hope and, dare I say it, ~ dreams ~.
The Israel Museum is another great spot to check out. The art and historical exhibits shed light onto what the Land of Israel was like thousands of years ago and what it's like today.
If you're bummed about not getting great photos of the Kotel in the rain, the Western Wall Tunnels should be your go-to. Check out models of the Temple and the walls Herod built for yourself!
And if you're looking for another holy spot to check out, head to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It was most recently reconstructed in the 11th century and features incredible artwork around the site of Jesus's recorded crucifixion. A must-see for Christians and non-Christians alike!
Tel Aviv
The Palmach Museum is a multimedia, interactive museum about one of Israel's pre-state troops. Walking through this video-studded museum surrounded by intricate scenery and animation is an immersive way to learn about Israel around the time of its establishment and the people that helped found it on the ground.
The Rabin Center is another great educational opportunity in Tel Aviv. Learn about Israel's history through the last century paralleled with world events that happened at the same time. It highlights Yitzhak Rabin's journey and his downfall as Prime Minister, as well as the impact it had on the State of Israel.
Sarona Market is a foodie's must-visit, rain or shine. Filled with choices from pasta to halva to sushi, Sarona truly has something for everyone to enjoy. Bon appetit!
Haifa
Dine in the German Colony! While this street is technically outdoors, the restaurants all have indoor seating. The German Colony is a super trendy spot at the base of the Bahai Gardens, so even if you can't walk through the gardens in the rain, you'll still get a great view. For dinner, we recommend Fattoush.
Akko
Or Torah Synagogue is one of the most striking sights to see in the whole city. The synagogue is covered from floor to ceiling (literally) in mosaics of the Temple, the twelve tribes, Israel, and even the whole world. Make sure to check out this incredible spot.
The Knights' Halls are also a must-see if you're in Akko. While getting between exhibits is outdoor, the few seconds of rain are worth it to see this museum of Roman ruins. Make sure to get a headset for this one.
Tzfat
Tzfat is known for its artists and galleries, and its Artist's Colony is filled with just this. The street is covered by an overhang, so you don't have to worry about being rained on when hopping between galleries. Browse on!
Eilat
Top 94 is an indoor adventure park in Eilat. It features indoor rock climbing, obstacle courses, go karts, a shooting range, and so much more. A great way to be active while staying dry.
