Last week, Bibi was indicted on three charges related to unethical behavior during his time as Israel's Prime Minister. The cases are pretty confusing, though. Need more information? Check out these short summaries of the cases and a bit about why they matter.
The Cases:
Case 1000
Netanyahu's charge for Case 1000 is for fraud and breach of trust. In this case, Netanyahu is suspected of receiving gifts in exchange for political favors for Arnon Milchan, a Hollywood film producer.
Case 2000
The charge for case 2000 is also for fraud and breach of trust. Here, though, he is suspected of using legislation to attack the Israel Hayom newspaper in exchange for favorable coverage in Yedidot Ahronot.
Case 4000
Case 4000 is for bribery as well as fraud and breach of trust, as Netanyahu is suspected of taking steps to benefit Shaul Elovitch of Bezeq in exchange for favorable coverage on their news site.
Why does this matter?
This is the first time in Israel's history that a sitting Prime Minister has been indicted, which makes this kind of a big deal. In addition, with elections continuing to roll through and through, Netanyahu's interests are in staying in office as long as possible. As the Basic Laws of Israel state that a sitting Prime Minister cannot be forced out of his position as PM as a result of the charges so long as he is PM, Bibi will likely do anything he can to stay in office (whether that be a third election, a deal that he holds the prime ministership for a certain number of years on a rotation, or any other related deal).
